Gwani Mustapha Ibrahim
Founder Gwani Mustapha
Malam Mustapha Ibrahim Sani is a licensed Qur’anic reciter who obtained his Ijazah and Isnad (a certified chain of Qur’anic transmission) in 2014 from his master, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Rufa’i Uba Hamza Gabari of Kano, Nigeria.
In recognition of his excellence in Qur’anic recitation, he was awarded the title “Al-Mahiru bil Qur’an” by the Qur’anic Reciters’ Organization of Nigeria in 2022.
Malam Mustapha’s passion for Tajweed began at an early age. Over the years, he studied various mutun (texts) of Tajweed from notable scholars around the world. Under the supervision of Sheikh Rufa’i Uba Hamza Gabari (Al-Muqri), he successfully recorded his recitation of the complete Holy Qur’an.
He has been teaching Qur’an and Tajweed for more than 20 years in different schools and mosques across Kano State. Between 2007 and 2010, he served as the Head of the Qur’an Department at Nana A’isha Islamic School.
Beyond the classroom, Malam Mustapha shares knowledge through the media. He hosts a Qur’an program every Friday on Aminchi Radio Kano 103.9 FM from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Additionally, he presents the daily Qur’an recitation and translation segment from 5:45 am to 6:00 am on the same station. He also delivers translation and commentary sessions on Imam Al-Nawawi’s Riyadus-Salihin every Friday at 6:30 pm, with a repeat session on Tuesdays at 6:35 pm.
He is also a regular guest on Ammasco Radio’s programme “Mutum da Tushensa”, which focuses on counselling, mediation, guidance, and Islamic preaching to foster peace and harmony in society. With over 15 years of counselling experience, he has become a respected adviser and community guide.
Malam Mustapha has written a Tajweed book in Hausa titled “Jagoran Mai Karatun Al-Qur’ani”, and he has participated in numerous conferences, seminars, and workshops on Qur’an and related fields. His community service extends further, as he serves as a mediator at the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.
His impact as a teacher goes far beyond academics. Many of his students testify to his guidance and mentorship. For example, he motivated and guided one of his students to establish a masjid and an Islamic school. He is often entrusted by students and community members to help distribute Zakat and organize Sadaqatul Jariya projects due to his integrity and trustworthiness.
Over a decade ago, some of his students including myself, Jidda Umar established a digital Qur’an class under his guidance. With his approval and conditions (three sessions per week and a maximum of eight students), this initiative has continued to grow steadily and successfully.
Today, his students remain deeply grateful for his mentorship, dedication, and selfless service to the Qur’an and the community.
